Urban Senior Portrait Session

Urban senior sessions are favorites. We love combining architecture, strong colors and all the lines and angles of the city in our backgrounds. Urban senior sessions work with a variety of outfits and almost any light, although we always prefer the soft golden tones of late afternoon outdoors. With our In & Out session we also do some studio shots (both natural light and studio flash is possible in our studio) just in case you need some more business looking shots for internships, grant applications or a more formal feel.  We’ve seen some really great looking suits this past year!

For this session we were not interested in a soft natural background with grass and trees. So what elements make great additions to the Urban senior sessions? Strong verticals with lots of color, like this shot of Austin on the yellow tile wall –which he liked so much we chose it for the cover of his coffee table book.

strong lines and colors make great senior session backgrounds

Another great urban look is concrete walls — the opposite of strong color, but still adding depth and interest. We especially like the stains and texture of urban senior portraits in unexpected areas like parking garages and alleys. A big favorite with jeans and layers of casual clothing! We can even combine light and shadow with graffiti and rust — awesome texture plays for backgrounds — as seen in this portrait.

Concrete makes a strong background and shadows make it interesting but neutral. We can do a lot with a concrete wall. And these shots of Austin make him look like he should be modeling for a clothing magazine. The dark jacket makes great contrast with jeans and the neutral background pulls it all together.

All neutrals with black and white polka dots, concrete and a touch of nature soften the look of an urban session without making it too feminine and a bright day gave us all the light we needed. This is the perfect type of session for early spring as we didn’t need a lot of greenery and trees to make the look we wanted. Our senior sessions are now booking for the spring and lots of seniors are choosing this bright bare look. Lastly, we loved the moodiness of the dead vines on the wall. It’s not the warm and fuzzy feeling that every family wants for over the fireplace but the art and texture of the clean lines and dramatic contrast is a real winner.

Mood and depth really grab the attention in a low key texture shot
